As I discover Frida Kahlo I feel more fascinated by her work and the depth of the character. She was certainly a great woman, an icon of her culture, her people and the world. Her work can't be separated from her experiences and her constant struggle in life.
A medida que voy descubriendo a Frida Kahlo me siento más fascinada por su obra y la magnitud del personaje. Sin duda fue una gran mujer, icono representativo de su cultura, de su pueblo y del mundo. Su obra no se puede desligar de sus vivencias y su constante lucha por la vida.

When she was 6 years old she fought against the polio and its aftermath.
Determined to study medicine, Frida was one of the first 35 women to join the National School of Mexico, there she joined a group called "Las Cachuchas" where she indulged her rebelliousness. It was then, in 1925, when she had an accident that left her at the brink of death, a truck impacted with the tram in which she was travelling. She was immobilized in bed and she had to wear a brace for months. During this period she fought againts boredom by painting.

Decidida a estudiar medicina, Frida fue una de las primeras 35 mujeres en ingresar en la Preparatoria Nacional de México, allí se unió a un grupo llamado "Las Cachuchas" dónde daba rienda suelta a su rebeldía. Fue entonces, en 1925, cuándo tuvo un accidente que le dejó al borde de la muerte al impactar un camión con el tranvía en el que viajaba y por lo que estuvo inmovilizada con un corsé en su cama durante meses. Durante este periodo lucho contra el aburrimiento pintando.
Matilda, her mother commissioned a special easel so she could paint in bed laying down. She was accustomed to pose in front of her father's camera, Guillermo Kahlo, a great photographer of that time. Frida did install a mirror on the ceiling of the room to paint-herself.: "I paint self-portraits because I am so much of my time alone, because I am the person I know best."
Matilda, su madre, encargó un caballete especial para que pudiera pintar estando estirada en la cama. Habituada a posar frente la cámara de su padre, Guillermo Kahlo, gran fotógrafo de la época. Frida hizo instalar un espejo en el cielo raso de la habitación para poder pintar-se a si misma.: “Pinto autorretratos por que estoy gran parte de mi tiempo sola, por que soy la persona a quien más conozco”.

Two years after the accident Frida appeared with three of her works at the Ministry of Education where Diego Rivera was painting a mural. She wanted him to evaluate her paintings. Diego discovered a great talent and encouraged her to continue in the art world. From that moment, the two artists use to meet and fall in love. On August 21st 1929 they got married becoming one of the most extravagant couple ever known.
A los dos años del accidente Frida se presentó, con tres de sus obras, a la Secretaría de Educación Pública donde Diego de Rivera pintaba un mural, para que este las evaluara. Diego descubrió en Frida un gran talento y la impulsó a que siguiera en el mundo del arte. Desde ese momento los dos artistas se fueron viendo y fue surgiendo un gran amor. El 21 de agosto de 1929 se casaron formando una de las parejas más extravagantes que se han conocido.

Frida went with Diego in his travels to the United States where he painted large murals, at the same time, she was glowing within herself light becoming a great artist by her own right. She was the first Mexican artist who exhibited at the Louvre.
Frida's life was a lot of physical and emotional suffering, perhaps this ia why she lived so passionately until the last day of his life. And her paintings are the proof that we will discover in future entries.
En la vida de Frida Kahlo hubo mucho sufrimiento físico y emocional, tal vez por ello vivió apasionadamente hasta el último dia de su vida. Y así lo demuestran sus cuadros que iremos descubriendo en proximas entradas.
